PROJECTS

BURLEY WOODHEAD COTTAGE GARDEN

This garden was designed to frame views, allow rear access and to provide different seating areas each with their own lovely view beyond the garden. The view from inside the house is colourful and picturesque for much of the year. The original garden was brought up to date with a bold, naturalistic planting scheme inspired by Piet Oudolf (The Highline and Scampston Walled Garden) and it includes beautiful grasses which catch the wind and hold raindrops and long season perennials which attract bees and butterflies.

BINGLEY END TERRACE GARDEN

This small rear garden had a disused garage base, no privacy and was without boundary definition. The owners wanted a modern garden in which small children could play safely. Raised, white rendered beds were installed with a planting scheme to provide interest for much of the year. This includes spring bulbs, long lived perennials and grasses.

ILKLEY COURTYARD STYLE GARDEN

The owners wanted an outdoor dining space which was accessible through glass doors and a second small lawn area. Both spaces are semi-enclosed with carefully chosen planting, as half the garden is always shady. The high retaining wall at the rear needed softening. This was achieved with a layout which reduced the dominance of the wall through the use of low raised beds containing layered planting. Focal points connect the garden to the house visually. The garden is being built this year.

"Good planting design does not follow a formula. At best, it allows you to experiment with nature and through nature to make an original statement. As in all of the arts, the best garden designers take risks. Only by taking risks can you come up with something exciting and original."

The garden design process includes:

  • A meeting to gain an understanding of your wishes and view your garden.

  • A survey to record features, topography and dimensions when we also agree direction and sign-off proposals.

  • The exploration of ideas and solutions.

  • A meeting to finalise ideas including the planting.

  • The drawing up of a scaled and detailed final design.

MY STORY

I live in Ilkley and have 1st class BA (Hons) degree in garden art and design therefore I have been immersed in the world of garden design and all its intricacies including; conceptual design, garden design history, creative planting, art, good design principles and detailing.  My years of teaching landscape architecture and garden design to students at Leeds and Craven College have developed my knowledge and skills so that I can offer you creative solutions which will enhance your surroundings and bring delight.

My aim is to create for you, an engaging, practical and durable garden. I am trained to design site specifically, drawing on the unique qualities of place. With an approach that is creative, problem solving and holistic, together we can make the most of your space, whatever your wishes.

INSPIRATION

Direction, importantly, comes from you, the client, and inspiration from the unique qualities of your garden and its surroundings.

"Each site has its own special qualities of stone and earth and water, of leaf and blossom, of architectural context, of sun and shade, and of sounds and scents and breezes.  Seek these out, and you will discover promises of formal order or of artful naturalism - the beginnings of your garden."

STILGOE, 1998

My creative approach stems from my Leeds Beckett University education and teaching experiences, where I learned of the work of iconic designers such as Thomas Church (USA), Piet Oudolf (The Netherlands) and Dan Pearson (UK). Being at Leeds, I had the opportunity to discover endless ideas related to garden design and I was lucky enough to visit many famous gardens. These experiences have shaped the way I work.

Art can trigger creativity in unexpected ways, for example by invoking geometry. Geometry can lead to the creation of strong, simple frameworks. These should address functional requirements and are the key to good design. I lean towards bold planting which counterbalances strong frameworks and can define space. This style can be easy to maintain and look stunning for much of the year. Bold planting can also fulfil functional needs, such as the framing or screening of a view.

Where possible, I promote sustainability and the use of plants attractive to our declining wildlife. I will also share my knowledge of maintenance so that your garden can be kept beautiful as it evolves.

COSTS

Gardens can be expensive to build depending on logistics, materials and labour. Plants can be costly too but the right plant in the right place will bring years of pleasure. Less expensive, younger plants soon grow and many can be divided, once established, to fill spaces.

Ideas can be implemented in a staged way to suit your budget and the garden can be designed to keep build and plant costs manageable. My design fees are competitive and the first meeting is free, if you live within a few miles of Ilkley.

A professionally designed garden can enhance your daily life and improve your property.

WHAT YOU SAID

“We wanted to tell you what a wonderful job you have done transforming the garden to one that blends in with the adjacent moorland and reflects the character of the property. The stone walls and paving provide an excellent backdrop for the clever mix of perennials and grasses.“

DEBRA & TIM

“Sandra has created a garden which is interesting and calming in the depths of winter and a haven in summer where we can enjoy a glass of wine.“
